Provincial Government to employ DOH nurses

The provincial government will employ the Department of Health (DOH) public health nurses who will not be rehired this year under its Nurses Deployment Program.

Governor Ongchuan decided to absorb the DOH nurses following a report from Dr. Rommel Francisco, DOH Provincial Officer, during the Provincial Health Board Meeting recently held at the Capitol with provincial health officials in attendance.

Thirty (30) public health nurses hired under the DOH NDP in 2020 and assigned to different LGUs in Northern Samar will not be rehired this 2021, Dr. Francisco revealed. Following a health human resource assessment by the agency, DOH will be rehiring 250 public nurses this year, with a reduction of about 30 slots from last year, Dr. Francisco said.  Five have already expressed their intent not to renew.

Governor Ongchuan committed to employ the 25 public health nurses on a contractual basis to provide livelihood support to them who may be displaced this year due to a reduction in the DOH NDP slots for Northern Samar this 2021.

There are 24 RHUs in Northern Samar where the NDP nurses are being deployed, complementing the delivery of healthcare services by the 8 district hospitals and the Northern Samar Provincial Hospital run by the provincial government.

As a resurge of COVID cases continue to pose a threat to the health sector of the province, provincial heath officer Dr. Ninfa Kam welcomed this decision of the provincial chief executive to augment the government hospital personnel, in addition to increased resource allocation for public healthcare services in Northern Samar.
