“No child should be left behind”. This is the campaign of the provincial government through its health arm, the Provincial Health Office, and the DOH Provincial Office as both prepared for the Measles Rubella - Oral Polio Vaccination in Northern Samar.
The vaccination will start on February 1, 2021 until February 28, 2021 simultaneous with other provinces in the country.
To mark the implementation of the program, the PDOH and PHO launched the Measles Rubella - Oral Polio Virus Vaccine Supplemental Immunization Activity (MR-OPVSIA) Phase 2 on January 27, 2021 in Catarman, supported by UNICEF and World Vision.
The launching was made jointly with the orientation on the MR-OPV Immunization Activity which was participated by Municipal Health Officers (MHOs), Rural Health Midwives (RHMs) and Public Health Nurses (PHN) from the different municipalities in the province.
Governor Edwin Ongchuan graced the launching, administering the oral poliovirus vaccine to a 4-year-old girl from Catarman, while Dr. Ninfa Kam, provincial health officer, gave the kid a shot of the measles rubella vaccine.
In his message, Governor Ongchuan said the vaccination against measles rubella and polio is a stepping stone for the vaccination against COVID-19.
Meanwhile, Dr. Kam stressed “it is important to have children vaccinated against measles, rubella and polio so that they don’t become susceptible to these diseases. Or else, this may give way to a measles, rubella or polio epidemic”.
Dr. Rommel Francisco, Provincial DOH Officer, encouraged RHUs and the public to support the campaign if we want to prevent an outbreak in the coming months. He particularly noticed misconceptions about the effects of the vaccine which he said makes it difficult to reach the national target.
The program aims to end the recurring polio virus transmission and re-circulation in the country. The 1st Phase of MR-OPVSIA was made on November 2020 due to an increase in the number of susceptible under 5 year olds. These diseases can lead to serious complications, disability and even death, but preventable through vaccination.
Eligible children for the Measles-Rubella Vaccine are children from 9 to 59 months old (4 years old & 11 months), while for the Bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine (bOPV) are for children 0 to 59 months old.
